Abstract

This research aims to Investigate the Gully expansion and estimate the amount of soil erosion and sedimentation in the Dashte Jeyhoon watershed. To investigate the expansion of gullies and determine their growth rate, aerial photographs of 1967 and 1994, historical images of Google Earth in 2012, and UAV imaging in 2023 were used. WaTEM/SEDEM and RUSLE models were used to estimate surface erosion. To estimate gully erosion, UAV imaging was done on the gullies in the area with a GSD of 3 cm, and gully expansion was extracted. The amount of soil loss due to the gully erosion was estimated by measuring the morphometric characteristics of gullies. The results showed that the area of gullies has increased from 132.64 hectares in 1967 to 326.39 hectares in 2023, which indicates an expansion rate of 3.46 hectares per year. The morphometric characteristics of gullies were measured in 481 points using DEM with an accuracy of 6 cm obtained from a UAV. The average depth of the gullies is 1.01 meters, and generally, we can say that the gullies in the study area are mostly small and somewhat medium. The results showed the average soil erosion by surface erosion in the study area is about 3.40 ton/ha/yr. The total soil loss due to gully erosion was estimated about 52000 ton/yr. The 56-year average (period 1346-1402) of soil loss by gully erosion was calculated about 12 ton/ha/yr. Finally the total annual amount of soil loss by all types of erosion was estimated about 15.4 ton/ha/yr.
