The present study surveyed the taphonomy of the hyolithid shell bed at the basal part of the Kuhbanan Formation in Central Iran. Detailed microscopic and petrographic analyses of this horizon, which mainly consists of Triplicatella sp., indicate that mentioned species, along with scarce remains of trilobites and brachiopods, underwent a multi-stage sedimentary history. After the organisms died in their habitat and their soft tissues decayed on the seafloor in a calm, stable, offshore environment, the elongated hyolith shells became telescopically arranged. Their initial burial was subsequently affected by high-energy currents, leading to breakage and fragmentation. Following this, the shells exhibited random orientation and were infilled with sediments. They then underwent diagenetic processes and eventually lithified.
